Access World is a global commodity warehousing and logistics business. We specialize in handling, Storage, and processing of commodities including non-ferrous and ferrous metals, ferroalloys, project cargo, oil & gas, and other agricultural products. We are an approved warehouse keeper of the London Metal Exchange, and we provide LME warehousing and associated services to traders, producers, financiers, and consumers of base metals. In addition, we provide physical warehouse and related logistics services for commodities such as cocoa beans, rubber, cotton, and other agricultural products. Access World also acts as collateral manager of ferroalloys, minor metals as well as oil and gas. Regions operate in semi-autonomous offices with their corporate functions including commercial, finance HR, legal, and operations.

Purposes of the position:

The IR Manager is responsible for managing the Company’s employee relations function by ensuring fair, compliant, and consistent application of labour laws, internal policies, and best practices. This role serves as the central point of contact for disciplinary matters, grievances, labour disputes, and interactions with external IR stakeholders such as the labour dispute councils, labour consultants, and attorneys.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations and Disciplinary Management

  • Lead and manage the full spectrum of employee relations cases, including disciplinary hearings, incapacity, and poor performance cases.
  • Schedule, prepare, and coordinate disciplinary and incapacity inquiries in line with company policies and legislation.
  • Provide procedural and substantive guidance to line management regarding disciplinary and corrective actions.
  • Draft and serve notices of hearings, outcome letters, and other related IR correspondence.

Counselling and Conflict Resolution

  • Conduct informal and formal counselling sessions with employees to resolve minor misconduct and interpersonal conflict.
  • Facilitate conflict resolution processes and guide managers in resolving day-to-day workplace issues.

Grievance Handling

  • Manage the employee grievance process from receipt to resolution, ensuring fair and timely outcomes.
  • Conduct investigations and provide recommendations in line with policy and legal requirements.

Case Management and Preparation

  • Prepare comprehensive case documentation, including evidence bundles, witness statements, and case summaries.
  • Ensure accurate and secure record-keeping of all IR matters by opening case files and storing them in the designated HR/HCM system.

External Representation

  • Represent the company at external labour councils.
  • Liaise with legal representatives and consultants to ensure effective case strategies and legal compliance.
  • Monitor case outcomes and implement learnings or changes to internal policies or practices where required.

Stakeholder Engagement and Guidance

  • Act as the key liaison with external labour consultants, and attorneys.
  • Provide coaching and IR-related training to line managers on disciplinary procedures, employee relations practices, and policy interpretation.
  • Support and guide managers on handling employee issues effectively and in line with best practice and labour law.

Reporting and Communication

  • Consolidate, compile, and present monthly reports on IR metrics, case trends, and risks to HCM, Executive.
  • Attend internal meetings to provide insight into IR matters and support cross-functional collaboration.
  • Respond to IR-related emails and other communications in a professional and timely manner.

Minimum Requirements:

National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Labour Law, or related field.

Advantageous:

Certification in Labour Relations or Advanced Labour Law (advantageous).

Experience Required

  • 5+ years’ experience in Industrial Relations, with a proven track record of handling CCMA cases.
  • Strong knowledge of South African Labour Legislation (LRA, BCEA, EEA, OHSA), over border labour legislation.
  • Experience working with unionized environments and managing stakeholders.
